We’re making it easier for people on bikes, scooters and skateboards to move around the city

We want Wellington to be a city where people can move easily and freely without relying on their car. That’s why we are working on plans for a city that has a longer-term view on how our bike routes connect to each other, actions to mitigate climate change, and how we will accommodate more houses and fewer cars in the city.

We’re putting in a bike route from Botanic Garden ki Paekākā to the city

There are a few obvious gaps in Wellington's bike network and we are getting underway to plug them. As part of the draft bike network plan, we are installing an interim bike route from Botanic Garden ki Paekākā to the city. This route will be a safer connection to bring people on bikes, scooters or skateboards into the central city from the west. Along the way, we'll be working with Greater Wellington Regional Council and Metlink to make some improvements to the bus network so it's easier to use low-carbon transport options.

We’ve started working on the design. We’re aiming to start at the pedestrian crossing outside the entrance to the Garden, follow the right-hand turn at the lights, travel along Bowen Street, into Whitmore Street and connect to the waterfront.

We'll be installing a first cut early 2022 using adaptable materials. Once it's in, we will be working hard to gather feedback on how it's going and make changes in real time to improve it.

We're after your feedback

We are in the process of gathering data within the area this bike route will be installed. The data we gather now, and in the future, will help us understand the impact of the changes we will make to the street. We have created a survey where we want to find out how about your current experiences of the routes and how you get around. The survey will take around 5-10 minutes to complete. Once the bike routes have been installed, we will be repeating this survey to give us an understanding of what improvements have been made.
