We’re putting in a bike route from Botanic Garden ki Paekākā to the city
There are a few obvious gaps in Wellington's bike network and we are getting underway to plug them. As part of the draft bike network plan, we are installing an interim bike route from Botanic Garden ki Paekākā to the city. This route will be a safer connection to bring people on bikes, scooters or skateboards into the central city from the west. Along the way, we'll be working with Greater Wellington Regional Council and Metlink to make some improvements to the bus network so it's easier to use low-carbon transport options.
We’ve started working on the design. We’re aiming to start at the pedestrian crossing outside the entrance to the Garden, follow the right-hand turn at the lights, travel along Bowen Street, into Whitmore Street and connect to the waterfront.
We'll be installing a first cut early 2022 using adaptable materials. Once it's in, we will be working hard to gather feedback on how it's going and make changes in real time to improve it.
