Planners have considered a multitude of possible ways to provide safer biking routes and connections through these neighbourhoods.
From all the initial information, a check-list of criteria was used to develop a long-list of possible routes. The criteria are based on Government and Council funding and city planning objectives, as well as the community desires that came through in feedback earlier in the year. The criteria also include a ‘fatal flaws’ measure to weed out the things that wouldn’t work.
The long-list included more than 1000 biking facility options for 59 sections of streets and 9 off-road routes, 24 network options and 36 package options. These were scored against the criteria to come up with a short-list.
To get to the three possible networks of routes now up for discussion, the planners looked at things from a range of perspectives, considered the pros and cons, the challenges and trade-offs, and whittled down the alternatives.
Although these are not necessarily the top-rating package options, all the viable potential routes are represented and they would still achieve the desired outcomes. We wanted to make sure there’s enough variety between the packages to give people plenty to consider.
You can read more detail about the criteria analysis in the Design Report.
