Newtown Connections packages

We sought feedback on three options - different packages of routes and street changes - in late 2018 (13 November–11 December). These were developed to get people thinking and talking about the best way to develop a proposed network in the area, so we can then develop a recommended option. This may well be a mix of the different packages.

None of the options were at a detailed design stage, and no decisions had been made, so it was a good time to provide feedback.  Community objectives developed in the first round of engagement (5 June–17 July) were used to help develop the three packages.

Packages overview

Package A overview package A treatments
Package A

Package A provides the most direct connections in and around Berhampore and Newtown, and to the central city and Kilbirnie. It also connects to the Island Bay route and the south coast.

Impacts
  • Safer and easier biking routes for more people. On-road bike lanes may not encourage less confident riders to use the Adelaide Road route.
  • Because of space constraints and the need to maintain vehicle flow, there would be a reduction in on-street parking. Greater impact on parking than packages B and C.
  • Has the most direct neighbourhood connections for Berhampore and Newtown.
  • Separated bike lanes/paths on both sides of the road (on the busiest routes) give people on bikes easier access to more destinations.
  • This treatment of bike lanes/paths on both sides would be consistent with the bike lanes and planned changes on The Parade and with the uphill bike lanes on Constable Street and Crawford Road.
  • Includes a link from Island Bay to South Wellington Intermediate School via an off-road paved path and bike lanes/paths on Russell Terrace.
  • There is the opportunity to provide urban design and landscape enhancements along the routes, including Berhampore and Newtown shopping areas.

Package B Overview b treatments
Package B

Package B provides a minimal network in and around Berhampore and Newtown, and to the central city and Kilbirnie. It also connects to the Island Bay route and the south coast.

Impacts
  • Safer and easier biking routes for more people.
  • Because of space constraints and the need to maintain vehicle flow, there would be a reduction in on-street parking. Similar parking impact to package C but less impact than package A.
  • Changes to fewer streets than packages A and C.
  • Has the fewest neighbourhood connections compared to packages A and C.
  • Separated two-way bike lanes/paths on one side of the street (side of the road yet to be determined). A disadvantage is that this treatment would not be consistent with the bike lanes and planned changes on The Parade or with the uphill bike lanes on Constable Street and Crawford Road.
  • There is the opportunity to provide urban design and landscape enhancements along the routes, including Berhampore and Newtown shopping areas.

Package C Overview c treatments
Package C

Package C is the most connected network of routes in and around Berhampore, Newtown and Mt Cook, and to the central city and Kilbirnie. It also connects to the Island Bay route and the south coast.

Impacts
  • Safer and easier biking routes for more people.
  • Because of space constraints and the need to maintain vehicle flow, there would be a reduction in on-street parking. Similar parking impact to package B but less impact than package A.
  • Connects more neighbourhoods compared to packages A and B and provides the most alternative routes, including Mt Cook.
  • Separated two-way bike lanes/paths on one side of the street (side of the road yet to be determined). A disadvantage is that this treatment would not be consistent with the bike lanes and planned changes on The Parade.
  • There is the opportunity to provide urban design and landscape enhancements along the routes, including Berhampore and Newtown shopping areas.

Let’s Get Wellington Moving

The transport improvements illustrated in this engagement will integrate with the work of Let's Get Wellington Moving. Parts of the Newtown Connections area are likely to be impacted by transport changes recommended in the future by Let’s Get Wellington Moving.

Enhancing the special character of Berhampore, Newtown and Mt Cook

The Newtown Connections project is primarily about providing safer routes and connections for people on bikes.

Once routes are determined next year, we will also look at what other changes could be made at the same time in these streets to make them more appealing for people walking and getting on and off buses.

Possible improvements could include:

commercial

key1
key2

residential

Additional future connections

Looking ahead, there are other routes that could be added to connect the wider Newtown area in the future with other destinations and areas in the southern suburbs.

Possible additional connections:

  • Wellington Zoo and Melrose connection
  • Mt Cook connection
  • Vogeltown/Kingston connection
  • Brooklyn connection
